Lake Como. The deepest of the Italian lakes with dramatic mountain scenery. Visit the Villa Carlotta built early 1700's with a lovely terraced garden. Take a boat trip on the lake.
Bellagio. It occupies a magnificent site on a promontory dividing Lake Como from Lake Lecco. Wonderful gardens at the Villa Serbelloni and at the privately-owned Villa Melzi.
Lake Maggiore. The most famous of the Italian lakes. Visit the Borromean Islands of Isola Bella and Isola Madre to see the palace and gardens built in 1670. Also visit Villa Taranto's botanical garden which was started in the 1900's.
Stresa. This is one of the most attractive towns on Lake Maggiore and appeals to many artists and writers.
Bergamo. Visit the pedestrianised Upper Town with its winding alleys and old houses. The Commedia dell'Arte originated here in the 1500's.
Malcésine. Goethe visited in 1788. Gorgeous views from the top of Monte Baldo on a clear day.
Bolzano. The capital of the Alto Adige sits in the middle of an agricultural area in a wide valley. On the main route north to Austria.
Verona. Colonized by the Romans in 89BC. The Arena was built by the Romans in 30AD, and is still used for opera performances today. Dante lived here in 1301. Shop at the market in Piazza Erbe or visit Juliet's house. Also known for its vineyards.
Lake Garda. The largest of the Italian lakes is renowned for its wonderful scenery. A favourite summer playground.
Sirmione. The old part of town is on an island in Lake Garda. The Roman poet Catullus owned a villa here 820BC and the present castle was built by the Scaligeri family during 1200's. The narrow village streets are only for pedestrians.
Trentino-Alto Adige. A semi-autonomous region of Italy that was part of Austria until World War I. It is still an area where the German language and food mix with Italian culture.
Dolomites. A winter sports paradise with stunning scenery in winter or summer. A distinctive landscape of craggy limestone peaks.
Cortina d'Ampezzo. The town hosted the 1956 winter Olympics. The start of the scenic Dolomite road to Bolzano.
